About Back Meadow Farm Inc.

We are a small, family run business that has prided itself in offering superior workmanship for 40 years. Our reputation stands along the mid-coast from Pemaquid to Cape Elizabeth as a company of quality, integrity, and ingenuity. We are a full-service landscape design and development firm, offering ideas and solutions for every aspect of your new construction or renovation project. From foundations to raised beds, we’ve got you covered.

We take pride in using organic products whenever possible because we are devoted to preserving Maine’s beautiful coast for generations to come. We are committed to reusing and recycling as much as we can in the construction process daily: transplanting usable & unwanted plant material from one site to another; stockpiling on-site organic topsoil during excavation; relocating and re-purposing blasted ledge to create roadways, outcroppings, and slope retainage; and composting organic material that can’t be reused. All chip-able demolition and construction debris is processed locally and available for use as erosion control.

Owner and president Ned Kirkland founded Back Meadow Farm 40 years ago in 1978 on Main Street in Damariscotta. He poured his heart and sweat into the business and quickly established Back Meadow Farm as one of mid-coast Maine’s finest landscape businesses. Today, he is happy to have two of his children by his side, each pouring their own hearts and sweat into the company’s steady evolution to a full-service landscape design and development firm. Today, Back Meadow Farm employs a crew of more than 20 experienced professionals in peak season and a dedicated core staff in the winter months.

Ned Kirkland

Over the last 30 years, Ned has used his innate ability to capture the essence of Maine’s quintessential coastal landscape to create and grow a thriving business. As founder, Ned set a precedence from the beginning of hard work, creativity, and integrity which has earned Back Meadow Farm a respected name and reputation of excellence in the mid-coast area. He is now enjoying his retirement but has left his mark instilling hard work and dedication in the next generation of the company.

Shep Kirkland

Shep spent many of his younger years working alongside his father and crew doing just about anything he could. He has seen all operations of the business, grown with the company, and has been a great addition to the development team. He spent seven years developing his own construction company in Jefferson, Maine, and returned to Back Meadow Farm full time in 2007. Shep has an unstoppable work ethic, sharp attention to detail, and a natural sense of creativity. He brings added knowledge of job site and crew coordination, estimation, experience with equipment operation, and professional customer service.

Emily Goodwin

Similar to Ned and Shep, Emily most enjoys the development and creative process of new projects as well as the revitalization of preexisting landscapes. Emily takes pleasure and pride in her work and is always looking to broaden her depth of knowledge and to sharpen her creative eye for landscapes and gardens. She prefers working outside with her crews but also participates in the demands of the office. Over the last several years she has been diligently developing the company’s portfolio, mainstreaming their software and attentively strengthening both the company’s and her own knowledge of today’s ever-changing landscape industry.
